Chapter 2 0

“When nothing goes right, go left.” –Cookie Monster

“Damn it!” I cried out as I tried, unsuccessfully, to force the ring back over my swollen finger. It had been a little tight last night before bed so I’d slipped it off, but now it wouldn’t go back on. My eyes watered with frustration as I made one last attempt to slide it onto my fat finger.

I’d known this was coming, that at some point I would have to take my wedding ring off, but I wasn’t ready. It felt too permanent, like I was accepting that I didn’t have a husband. That I wasn’t married anymore. It was the symbol of what we’d had, and taking it off felt like letting go of that. The world wouldn’t know that I’d loved someone enough to bind myself to him for the rest of our lives. I had though; the rest of his life just hadn’t been long enough.

I swore again and dropped the ring on the counter. There was no way it was going back on. I cried out and slammed my hand down on the counter, which hurt more than I’d been expecting it to. When I jerked my hand back, I knocked over the glass that was sitting there. It crashed to the floor and shattered. I slumped to the floor, clutching my hand and Ty’s ring that hung from the chain around my neck.

The front door swung open, but I didn’t bother to get up. I didn’t care who it was. Really, there were only two people who would just walk into my apartment, so the chances were good that it was either Mel or Casey.

“Olivia!” Casey called out. My spot on the floor was blocked by the counter, but I still didn’t get up.

“Over here,” I mumbled, wiping at my cheeks with my fingers.

He stepped into the kitchen area and looked down at me worriedly. “Are you okay? I heard something crash.”

“A glass broke,” I said flatly.

He looked around the counter and floor, seeing the glass shards. His brow wrinkled and he looked back at me, clearly confused. “Was it a special glass?”

“No, just a regular glass.”

He stared at me for a minute and then sighed, “You’re not upset about a glass, are you?”

I shook my head.

“Want to give me a hint?”

“My fingers are fat.”

“You dropped the glass because your fingers are fat?” I almost felt bad for the guy. He was trying.

“I didn’t drop it. I knocked it over when I hit the counter.”

“And you hit the counter because your fingers are fat?” He was struggling to make sense of it.

I nodded this time.

“Can we skip to the part where you tell me what’s actually wrong so I can try fix it, because I don’t really see this being about fat fingers either.”

From my spot on the floor, I pointed to the counter where I’d left my wedding ring sitting. His eyes searched for a minute before landing on it and then they flashed back to my now bare left hand.
