Chapter 21

Shane

I strolled down the dirt path between the trees, shaking my head as I passed the ailing trees, knowing there was nothing I could do to save them. It pissed me off and actually hurt a little. I made my way to the potting shed to check on the new trees that would be going in to replace the dying trees. It would be a few years before they produced even half as much.

I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket and considered leaving it to go to voicemail. Then I decided I better check to see who it was. I frowned when I saw it was my lawyer. Not really my lawyer because I didn’t need a lawyer. The guy was a leftover from my father’s regime and I was too lazy to go in search of another. I didn’t see the point.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Shane, it’s Curtis,” he announced.

“Yes, Curtis. What can I do for you?”

“You got an hour or two?” he asked.

“For?” I questioned. That was a pretty big ask.

“I was hoping you had some time to come into the office to go over a few things.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It isn’t good,” he said.

“What now?”

“I was contacted by an attorney.”

I smirked. “That makes sense. Aren’t you an attorney? Don’t you guys talk?”

“For Scarlet,” he said, clearly not amused by my humor.

I sighed, staring down at my feet. “What now?”

“I think it would be better if you came into the office here in town. I’m only here for the day. There’s a lot to cover.”

I did not want to go. I did not want to know. It was so much easier to just ignore her. I wanted her to go away. Why wouldn’t the woman just go away? “Give me an hour,” I muttered.

I slammed the door on the shed, walked back to my place, and quickly threw on a clean shirt. I grabbed my keys and left the orchard. That woman was going to drive me crazy. I got to the office and walked inside the small place. It was nothing like his fancy place in the city.

“Come in, Shane,” he said and opened the door to his office.

I walked in and sat down. I knew it was going to be bad news. “What does she want now?”

“All of it.”

“All of it?” I repeated.

He slowly nodded. “She wants it all.”

“Did you tell him to get bent?”

He choked. “No, I did not say that.”

“Can you make it go away?”

“I think it is going to be tough to do that. She’s got a good case.”

“How can she possibly have a good case? You did his will. You said it was airtight.”

“It is, but she is trying to go around it. She wants the money.”

“Fuck her,” I snapped.

I knew it irritated him when I talked like that. I didn’t care. I was irritated. This woman was going to drive me crazy. Worse than a bad rash, she just refused to go away.

“We have to respond to the suit but there is a good chance it will go in front of a judge.
