CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Chance

I hung up the phone. I had just made an appointment to see a doctor, and when I explained what the appointment was for, they asked me to come in right away. Of course, I had a feeling that Cap had told them to expect my call. I had made a trip to Cap’s office earlier today, not quite sure why I was going there. Maybe it was guilt or maybe it was because I felt I deserved a beat down from him. Either way, I walked in and just sat there. I didn’t know what to say, but he didn’t try and make me talk. I must have sat in his office for a good hour, just staring out the window. He went about his work, glancing at me every once in a while. And when I finally worked up the courage to do what I had to do, I left his office.

Now, here I was, standing outside Gabe’s house, trying to build up the courage to knock on his fucking door. I raised my fist and then lowered it again, clenching it tight. It shouldn’t be this hard to ask for help. It shouldn’t feel so fucking shitty to admit that I needed help. But something had to change. I knew it and so did everyone else.

The door swung open and Gabe walked through, jerking his head at me to follow. He got into the passenger seat of my truck and buckled in, waiting for me to leave.

“So, where are we going?”

“Clinic,” I said shortly.

“Took you long enough.”

We drove in silence the rest of the way. He didn’t try and get me to talk about it or ask me to tell him what made me change my mind. And when we got to the clinic, he walked inside and took a seat while I checked in. I didn’t want him going back with me. It was bad enough to ask him to take me to the fucking clinic, though, I never actually asked him to and he didn’t drive me. But knowing he was there with me was enough.

When I was called, I headed back with the nurse and got all the usual shit done. Talking with the doctor wasn’t something I was thrilled about, and based on my short answers to his questions, he wasn’t too thrilled with having me as a patient. I could tell he was trying to be understanding, but I could also tell that he was getting frustrated that he wasn’t getting the whole picture.

I walked out with a cocktail of medications that I was supposed to pick up at the pharmacy, each treating a different symptom. He started me on meds that were all supposed to work well together and gave me a pat on the shoulder, telling me that we would straighten things out. I wanted to fucking punch him.

Gabe didn’t say too much on the way back to his house either. He told me he would see me later and told me to call if I needed anything.
