Monday Am propped up on my studio couch, having at last found a way of ‘sitting comfortably’ – one end pushed up against the wall behind, &, not a carrot, but a bottle of Riesling, within reach. What makes me search the telephone directory (London) to see if there is anyone called Rabbit? There isn’t, but there is a K. Rabbitt in S.E.19. And there is a Rabits. Then a host of crypto-rabbits, Rabinovitchs & so on. Rabbis.
I feel better today: there’s no doubt working does me good. Spent most of the day conferring with the Asst. Reg. about furniture for the new Library. Nobody much about except Wood, & ’Espinasse with his daily rose in his buttonhole (self grown), & I-knew-Julian-Huxley line. I’ve been reading Corvo’s The desire & pursuit of the Whole since supper, & enjoying it no end. I love Corvo: on paper. […]
Don’t you adore Carol Grey’s voice when Tony S. is making love to her? It quite broke me up over my leathery tinned tongue tonight: she goes all small & unconfident. She’s the only woman on the programme1 I’ve ever liked. I’m getting to the point where I want to bang a skillet on Prue’s head. Most of the cast seem on holiday: haven’t heard Walter for weeks, & the programme staggers on by means of Carol, Tony, Prue, John, Laura, & of course Doris-and-Dan.

The Railway Accident3 was actually pub. in U.S.: I must try to get hold of it. But it’s not only that that makes the book4 interesting. I’m fascinated by ‘my friend Eric’ – one never quite gets who he is, or what he’s doing in the book. I know every inch of it, & can’t criticise it any more than one can criticise a garden one played in as a child. […]
