With my heart pounding a gazillion miles a minute, I looked back and up and down Main Street, but didn’t see anyone, or even dummies, peering out windows watching me. The handbill had to be some kind of joke, but from whom and why? I snatched it off the door and tucked it into my hip pocket.

Back at the fort’s entrance, I got a second surprise—this time a nice one. In the window of the cabin, a faint light shone. Kat had found lantern fuel. Matches, too. I could almost feel the warmth of the blazing, hot fire we were about to enjoy.

Then I got a third surprise at the fort’s entrance—this one not so nice. A mama bear and her cubs roamed about on the snowy, military fort parade grounds, blocking my route back to the cabin.
