For the detailed arguments concerning the dating of the Satyrica, see the Introduction to this volume. Of the recent scholarship on Petronius, I would like to flag Connors (1998) as being particularly relevant to this chapter, as well as Roland Mayer’s classic article (1982) with its emphasis on the recyclable nature of Latin literary culture. For Suetonius’s Lives of the Caesars, a good starting point is the translation by Catharine Edwards (2000) with its useful notes and index, while Andrew Wallace-Hadrill’s monograph (1983) offers what is still one of the clearest discussions. For a convenient edition of the Life of Nero in Latin, see Warmington (1999).

The extreme nature of Nero’s reign lends itself to retelling and attempts at rationalization. Most sophisticated among recent studies is Miriam Griffin’s Nero: The End of a Dynasty (1984). Also worthwhile – on the regime and the strategies adopted by those living under this regime – is Rudich (1993). Particularly formative for the above discussion of his image and reputation are Bartsch (1994), Elsner and Masters (1994), and Champlin (2003), as well as Henderson’s difficult but rewarding article of (1989), revised for his later Fighting for Rome (1998). On the representation of imperial power more broadly, with an emphasis on the problems of repetition and succession, see Vout (2009), and on Roman imperial visual display, Elsner (1998). Explosive on the Roman triumph is Mary Beard (2007).
