Einstein replaced the earlier assumed space-filling aether, which had never been detected or verified, with space-time. Space (or space-time) has been treated as a something ever since, although there is no way to confirm its material existence any more than that of the aether. One of the reasons why aether was needed in the first place was the seeming paradoxes of gravity and the propagation of waves without a carrier for them. Let me explain.
GRAVITY
Gravity obviously acts over vast distances to hold and draw masses together into stars, solar systems, galaxies and clusters. Why is there gravity and how does it work? The mechanism for this is poorly understood, although its influence can be calculated precisely by celestial mechanics as first proposed by Newton.10 There is still a debate about whether gravity travels at some finite speed or is instantaneous, and also whether it has a limiting distance of influence. We do know that light takes 8 minutes to reach earth from the sun but the sun's gravitational pull, as seen in its contribution to tides, occurs where the sun actually is, not where we see the sun to be (as it was 8 minutes ago). Is gravity instantaneous or at some speed much greater than the speed of light? Greater than light? Isn't light speed believed to be the upper limit?
What could possibly explain this seemingly instantaneous effect over vast distances? It was thought that there must be some substance that carries gravity from one body to another, and thus the aether. With Einstein's space-time, the problem was again assumed to be solved. Space-time (ie, aether) must carry the gravitational influence as a warping of space-time by mass, like a bowling ball compressing a mattress but in all three dimensions. Bodies would then naturally fall into this “gravity well.” Thus, gravitational influence would be instantaneous and at the same time decrease with the square of the distance. In reality we are back to aether, only by another name backed by new theoretical calculations based on assumptions. The warping of space-time can be useful as an analogy in instruction to see the law of gravity, but is it real or just a great thought picture that illustrates its effects? Could it be a field like electromagnetism?
PROPAGATION OF WAVES
Since space is thought to be an almost perfect vacuum, (empty), how is light propagated without something to carry it? We know by experience that radiation across the entire spectrum11 will travel through a vacuum in the laboratory, but how is it possible? All radiation is thought to be electromagnetic waves and is classified as a “standing wave.” So, in a vacuum, or space, what is being waved? How can it continue to travel in nothingness for vast eons of time apart from its original source which may or may not continue to exist in its original form or location? Here again, a space-filling aether or space-time must be carrying it.
Secondly, light (any radiation) has been redefined not as a wave but as a particle or packet of radiation, the photon.
