AWAKENED BY THE SOUND of the alarm, Patrice rolled over in her bed and fiddled around for her phone. Once she'd used the touchscreen to end the screeching, she cursed. Thursdays were her day, off, but she'd been so distracted yesterday, she'd forgotten to turn off the alarm. Now, here she lay, wide awake at seven in the morning, with nowhere to be.

A few hours ago, she'd come home from Dalton's house. He had to work today, and insisted on following her home in his car to make sure she got home safe in the darkness. She would have been fine staying at his place, but he said it would be rude to leave her there all day to entertain herself while he was out. After he'd given her a soft kiss and left, she'd fallen into bed for a few more hours of sleep.

Covering her mouth to stifle a yawn, she tossed back the covers and got out of bed. Ambling into the bathroom, she took care of her morning routine. Face and teeth freshly scrubbed, she donned a robe and plopped down on the bright red couch in her living room, television remote in hand.

As she surfed the endless array of channels, none of which held her interest, her mind drifted to Tuesday night's incredible encounter with Dalton. He'd turned out be just as legendary a lover as word on the street had claimed him to be. One night with him had made her body react in ways it never had before, to any man. Her nipples hardened to tight points at the very thought of him.

Pushing those thoughts aside, she concentrated instead on yesterday's surprise encounter with an old friend. When Minnie had mentioned hiring a female electrician, Patrice would never had guessed her old high school buddy, Nikki Evans, would show up. They'd spent a great deal of time chatting while Nikki had worked on rewiring the faulty outlet in the counter top. Before Nikki had left the store, they'd exchanged phone numbers.

Hearing her stomach growl, Patrice got up and went into the galley style kitchen to fix something for breakfast. Settling on a bagel, a banana, and a cup of coffee, she prepared the items, then took them back to the sofa.

She was enjoying the last sips of her coffee, and watching a segment on the local news morning show, when she heard a knock on the door. She could hear the creaking sound of her screen door being opened, then closing again, and reminded herself to oil it when she got a chance.

Setting her Garfield mug aside, she rose and checked the peephole. Seeing no one there, she shrugged, and was about to walk away when she saw a pace of paper wedged under her door. She stooped down to pick it up, noting her name was written on it in a familiar scrawl.

A smile spread across her face as she carried the folded sheet to the couch. Dalton.

Opening it, she read the words he'd written.
