I stare at Luca’s letter on my bed.

I want to write back.

I want to say something.

Nausea makes its arrival known, and I run to the bathroom once again.

Two days later…

“Willow, I brought you some toast and some ginger tea for your food poisoning.”

It’s an adorable tray with fresh flowers and a few photos of the kittens.

It’s heartwarming.

“Thank you so much,” I weakly manage to get out. My mouth is so dry, and I feel so dizzy. I feel awful.

Maria's eyes are on my breasts, and then she studies the toast before almost peering into my soul through my eyes.

“My love, you do not have a poisoning.”

“I don't?”

“You have a life growing in you. I know this look and my intuition tells me it's very young, but you have a baby inside you.”

“That's impossible. That's impossible. I can't. I have not been with a man….I mean, I had a mini stroke. The doctor said my hormones were jacked up and I may not of even be able to have babies in the future for a while. Something like that.”

“Don't you worry. You are with family now. Are you going to tell him?”

Him?

As in your nephew?

No.

That’s…just a no.

“My mom raised me by herself after a one night stand at some hippie festival protesting Vietnam. I can do the same.”

What am I supposed to do, act like a sicko and tell her that the baby is her nephew’s?

I don't have time to think of that possibility. Besides, there's no way I'm pregnant. That’s just…not possible.

Flashes of our lovemaking sessions tease me like a drug addict needing their favorite fix. And yes, our time together was very natural. I never thought about the possibility of getting pregnant. I just didn’t.

Because I’m not pregnant.

I’m just not pregnant….

My body disagrees as a rumble in my stomach demands attention north of the border.

“Maria, you're so sweet. I'm just, I'm sorry. You’re just mistaken. I have been really sick this year and I just think…I think that I ate something that doesn't agree with me and it’s made me sick for a few days. And then it turned into that stomach bug going around. You know, you’ve heard of it? A few people have it at the restaurant. You should warn Gino to be careful. But don't worry. I just have—”

I throw off the bedding and run to the toilet, my bare knees hitting the cold tile. The toilet has officially become my best friend.

I'm not pregnant...

Why does that feel like the biggest pack of lies I’ve ever told myself?
