“Every good barbecue has spare ribs, one of my favorite dishes,” Rhodan said of the first thing that came to mind, even if it sounded very much like an American stereotype. Of course, Toreead couldn’t have known that.

“Barbecue?”

“A barbecue is a big celebration, especially in the former cattle-breeding regions like Texas,” he explained. “Originally, it was just the name for a special way of preparing meat—large pieces were cooked for long periods of time, sometimes a whole day, in smoke at a temperature of at least a hundred and at most a hundred and thirty degrees. In the meantime, however, many barbecues have become pure barbecues—the meat is grilled directly over the almost 300-degree hot embers of fire in a much shorter time than with real barbecues.”

Toreead looked interested. “Different methods... You’d have to try that out. This ‘barbecue’ seems promising to me. You would have to try different types of wood and their effect on the taste. But there’s not a lot of wood on my home world. But more than on Naat.” He closed his eyes. “Glorious deserts...”

“You are not from Naat itself?”

Toreead opened his eyes again. “No. My home is Naatran. It wouldn’t be a world for you.”

“How can you be sure?”

“Naatran is a tough world. A world of strengths. A lot of desert, a lot of mountains.” Lost in thought, he made a strange, undulating movement with his arm. “And what exactly are these spare ribs made of?”

“You can make them from pork or beef ribs...”

“Bones?” interrupted the Naat.

Rhodan laughed softly. “Funny, that’s what everyone who hasn’t tried them asks. No, don’t worry: there is meat on the belly ribs, but not too much. You rub the ribs with spices and then cook them slowly with indirect heat and smoke. It is served with a slightly sweet, slightly sour, spicy dark sauce.”

“Strange,” said Toreead. “That’s a lot of effort for very little meat, isn’t it? Is it particularly rich in protein or nutritious?”

“You can’t really say that,” Rhodan admitted. “But it tastes fantastic. However, every family has its secret recipe. Besides, I think my aunt’s is the best.”

Toreead didn’t look convinced. “No wonder you didn’t go into space sooner. You need high-quality food. Jaku, for example. You can bake them in sand pits or roast them over fire in a bone cage. They consist almost entirely of protein.”

“And Jaku are?”

Toreead pondered. “Six legs, thin shells, two wings, antennae.” Then, with his thumb and forefinger, he showed the approximate size. “They migrate in swarms over Naatran, and their reproduction rate is gigantic; an ever-renewable food.”

Insects, then. Probably similar to grasshoppers there. “So, if I ever visit Naatran, should I ask for Jaku?”

Toreead nodded very earnestly. “Jaku are the best. And not difficult to catch for a Naat. With your soft, thin skin, they’d be more successful at eating you than the other way around.”

Rhodan shuddered. Naatran was clearly not a place he had to visit.

The two talked for a while about food in general and their respective favorite foods in particular.
