There was no denying it: the humans had started it. And the Naats did the only thing that was conceivable for them in this situation: they shot back.

The first shot had hit a Naat, who dropped his gun and leaned backwards. The five others immediately opened fire.

Bull felt a blow. Something rammed him. The impact threw him hard against the wall, squeezing the air out of his lungs. Desperately, he held on to the handle of the weapon, which suddenly became as heavy as lead. For a moment he saw bright lights dancing in front of his eyes. Then his vision cleared.

Bull wanted to lift the gun, but he realized that he couldn’t do it alone. It was Jan’s lifeless body that had been thrown against him.

The shooting was a massacre. The humans had no force fields; they were defenseless. None of the captured weapons could be used. The Naats shot at everything that moved. One of the next shots would hit him as well. There was nothing he could do to save his life.

Bull straightened up against the wall so that the Naats could see that he was still alive. He raised his arms, waved his hands to draw attention to himself. He shouted as loud as he could, “Stop! We surrender!”

Bull expected to be surrounded by a deadly volley of fire at any moment.

He blinked. He inhaled. He exhaled. He was still alive.

The Naats had ceased fire. Four were still standing or kneeling in front of them with their weapons raised. A single one had broken away from the group and walked towards Bull with his weapon down.

Bull recognized him at a short distance. He had seen this skin discoloration before, from ear to neck. It was the Naat who had killed Felicita.

Now he finally wants to finish what he started. He probably regrets leaving me alive.

He was afraid, but he didn’t want the Naat to notice. So he got up. If he had to die, he at least wanted to be standing upright. His perception of everything was crystal clear. He saw the Naat coming closer, saw his skin, his face, his hands. He heard weeping and sobbing, smelled burnt flesh, sweat, and urine.

The Naat reached Bull, who had to rest his head on the back of his neck in order to continue looking at his face. The alien got down on one knee in front of him.

“If you think you can kill me better this way, then by all means!” said Bull in a firm voice. “But if you think I’m whining for mercy this time, you’re very much mistaken!”

The Naat looked at him with his three eyes. His hands rose, then rested on Bull’s shoulders. Bull involuntarily closed his eyes, expecting the pain that would shoot through his neck.

Nothing happened. He opened his eyes.
