The Traitor

Levtan led Crest and his two companions from the Tosoma. He could clearly sense her suspicion; Anne Sloane and Tatiana Michalovna made no secret of it.

“What information?” asked Michalovna. “How is it going to help us?”

The woman is smart and attentive. I shouldn’t underestimate her. Levtan stopped close to a transition to the interior of the Web and turned to Michalovna. Behind her back, Gedt-Kemar loomed like a warning to him.

“I have a contact who maintains relations with the Regent’s innermost circle.” He looked at Crest. “He can give you important insider information about the current political situation.”

Crest, who was standing in the corridor between Michalovna and Sloane, made himself a bit taller. Despite his age, he looked imposing. “That’s well-intentioned, Levtan, but why should we need this information?”

Levtan began to sweat. The withdrawal symptoms were making themselves felt again. A knife scratched the wall of his stomach, and he felt overwhelmingly thirsty. If this Crest did not depend on information because he came from the highest circles, then Levtan was done for. But an Arkonide that came directly from the Regent himself did not travel in a wreck like the Tosoma or rely on the support of the Mehandor or any colonists. It was much more likely that Crest da Intral was an oppositionist. And even if not, the most loyal supporters of the Regent did not necessarily know what was happening in the highest circles.

“The situation has changed fundamentally,” he improvised. “My informant has indicated that the Regent is willing to break with centuries-old traditions in order to achieve his goals. You’ve been on a field mission for a long time, right, da Intral? If you want to do without my help, that is your choice, and I will not bother you any further. But if you want to get knowledge that gives your clan a decisive advantage, come with me. Your decision.”

Sloane took a step closer to Crest. “We should turn back to the Tosoma and talk about it.”

Michalovna nodded affirmatively. “The information will still be here.”

Crest shook his head. “You’re both wrong. The Tosoma will be repaired in a few hours. The Mehandor are known for fast and precise work. If we want the information, we have to go for it immediately.”

Michalovna narrowed her eyes. Again she looked at Levtan in a way that seemed strange to him. As if her gaze wants to penetrate through my skull and read the thoughts in it.

If the Terran could really do that, he was in grave danger. He put on a confidential smile. “As I said, it’s your decision. I don’t want to talk you into anything.” The needles in his stomach miraculously multiplied and pricked relentlessly.

Now bite at last, you Arkonide Moolworm, Levtan thought angrily. He needed these three. No more worries about supplies, that’s what they promised him: Kan’or for life. All he had to do was take control of them. He touched the finger with which he had brushed Crest’s piece of jewelry.
