Chapter seventeen

Harley

My heart was hammering as I skidded my car to a halt out front of Alex’s house.

Hunter had hardly gotten the words out that Jade had killed Stevo, and I was out the door and in my car.

She wasn’t built like Rory, and I hated that she’d had no choice other than to kill him.

She was never going to come back from this, no way in hell.

I jumped from my car, not bothering to close the car door as I raced inside, my eyes frantically darting around to find her.

Alex glanced up from the couch, his eyes surprisingly calm.

“Where is she?” I demanded, but Marco appeared in front of me, his voice firm.

“She’s fine, she’s asleep. Do not wake her up, or I’ll kill you,” he threatened, but I didn’t calm down.

I needed to see with my own damn eyes that she was okay.

“Move, I need to see her,” I growled, his eyes narrowing to slits.

He went to speak, but Alex stood and got between us, holding my shoulders to force me to look at him.

“I promise, brother. She’s alright. She’s had a shower and she needed to sleep so she’s in my bed. Go and check on her, but don’t wake her up,” he said in a low voice, waiting for me to nod before he let me go.

I didn’t waste any time as I headed through the house and into his room, a sense of calm washing over me as I saw her body peacefully sleeping like he’d promised, the blanket pooling around her waist.

She was wearing one of Alex’s shirts, and I let out a breath I didn’t realize I’d been holding.

He’d looked after her, and I was grateful to have a best friend who understood what she meant to me.

I should have left her alone now I knew she was alright, but I couldn’t bear to leave her when her body twitched and a whimper left her.

I quietly shut the door and kicked my shoes off, removing my jeans and shirt before sliding in behind her.

I told myself I’d just lay beside her, but the second time a pained sound left her lips, I shuffled against her back and wrapped an arm around her, burying my face between her shoulder blades.

She snuggled back into me, and I carefully placed my leg between hers, needing to be as close as possible to her.

I’d spent too much time being angry at her like she had with me, but all of that vanished as I held her, knowing things were about to change.

With Stevo gone, I didn’t have to worry about her as much, and hopefully she’d open up to the idea to being friends again if I tried hard to show her she could lean on me.

I had a lot of work to do to get her to see she needed me, I just had to hope that having blood on her hands wouldn’t send her running again.

No matter where she went, I’d follow.
