CHAPTER THIRTY
Wednesday
Harford, Pennsylvania
With great power comes great responsibility is an old adage often misattributed to politicians and other people of historic significance. In actuality, it first appeared in a Spider-Man comic book in 1962. Comic aficionados often refer to it as the Peter Parker principle. Fred Stewart was unaware of its historical background as being part of American pop culture. However, he certainly felt the weight of its significance on his shoulders.
He had set into motion a series of events born out of necessity and survival. He never had any intention of taking on the U.S. government, especially in some kind of armed conflict. Yet just a little over an hour ago, heâd found himself standing alone, facing half a dozen rifles and a contingent of National Guardsmen who were a little too overzealous in performing their duties.
When the power grid collapsed, Fred, whoâd been increasingly bitter over the years, as he felt his government and society had abandoned him, saw an opening to make up for many lost years. Like so many others across the country, Fred looked at the perfect storm as an opportunity to better his lot in life. He moved quickly and decisively to create a home for himself, surrounded by his comrades, and well stocked with supplies.
To be sure, he broke laws of man and civility to enrich himself. His hardened attitude to outsiders served his self-interest well. Then he gradually softened. From the initial interaction with the Cubbison family when their son was hurt, to the benevolence of Dr. Quinn, the veterinarian who saved his manâs life, he began to sense his role in the remote Pennsylvania town was something more than squatter and looter.
When he and his men were able to come to the rescue of the Cubbisons as they faced certain death at the hands of the criminal biker gang, he realized that he could be a force of good in the community.
With the change of circumstances, he could have enjoyed his role as the protector of the town and surrounding areas. He had slowly opened himself up to the local residents following the gun battle with the bikers at Cubbisonâs. He began to feel better about himself and his future. And then, once again, his government let him down. So he took action.
As a result, heâd commandeered three Humvees, three M35 cargo transports, and a dozen half-naked National Guardsmen, who stood before him in the rain. Fred managed a chuckle as he muttered the acronym FUBAR.
He prided himself on being fluid in his planning, adapting to conditions on the ground, as they used to say in Afghanistan. Heâd just bottom-lined the only possible scenario for his men as they spoke at the front of Harford House. They had to roll out. Quickly, in fact.
They expected the FBI agents and their National Guard escort to return at any time. Most likely, with reinforcements sufficient enough to dislodge Fred and his men from Harford House. He intended to leave the impression for the locals and the returning guardsmen that he had fled to New York.
