Natural sunscreens are made with microfine reflective powders from minerals from either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These tiny mineral particles sit on the surface of the skin and deflect UV rays away from the skin. Because they deflect all light that hits the skin they are naturally broad spectrum, so the skin is protected against UVA, UVB and, to some extent, visible light too. Another major advantage of natural sunscreens is that, once applied, they work instantly. Also, because they are not absorbed into the skin, they are ideal for sensitive skin and are less likely to cause allergic reactions. However, as with everything, there are also some disadvantages:

Some formulations can be thicker and harder to blend into the skin.

More attention is required during application as UV light can get in between the gaps of the mineral’s molecules.

They are not water resistant, although some more advanced formulations can offer some short-term resistance.

High SPFs may leave a white opaque shine on the skin.

They may create too much of a barrier over the skin, causing the skin to perspire more.

Sweating may cause the sunscreen to drip down, so more regular applications are needed when taking part in physical activities.
