three months earlier…

Forget the summer solstice. When you’re seventeen, summer begins the moment the bell rings on the last day of school.

That year, it was a Friday, and the students of J.H. Academy only had to endure a half day of school.

Even though the sound of the bell was something that they heard all the time, it was this particular ring that they had been looking forward to the most.

It only took a split second for the classroom doors to swing open and the central hallway to fill with teenage excitement. Plans for the next three months echoed off the walls. There were the sounds of shuffling papers and books being shoved deep into worn-out backpacks where they would not be seen again until the end of August. Amid all the talk and laughter, you could hear words like lake, beach, and party. There was another pair of words that floated across the hallway like a ghost, entering ears and tantalizing thoughts—bonfire and tonight. The two words placed together had the power to change anybody’s plans and cause even the most socially awkward juniors and seniors to imagine being there amongst the partiers.

Outside, even though it was not yet June, the weather was already nearly summertime hot. The sky was clear. White clouds hung like cotton across the wide expanse of blue. Some of the more adventurous girls of the school had worn their swimsuit tops underneath their school clothes and were now peeling off their tees and blouses in the parking lot. They piled into trucks and cars that spun out of the gravel parking lot on their way to freedom.
