Ifan didn’t read any more. He flew out the room, down the main stairs, heart hammering against his ribs. He dashed across the hall and through to the sitting room. No sign of Jack. The French window was open; the radio was playing. Dimly he registered it was playing “A Nightingale Sang.” Ifan approached the window cautiously, terrified of what he would find. He looked onto the terrace… and saw Jack, sitting in his chair facing the western horizon. Ifan let out a shaky breath, short-lived relief at finding him alive replaced by the dread that he had no idea what to do. He still had the letter clutched in his hand, and he hid it behind him.
