All of the preceding events give you an opening to exchange remarks about the event you are there for. These events bring other people into your life who are interested in at least one thing that interests you.
Other Strategies for Meeting People
Other strategies for getting to know the types of people who would make friends who are well-suited to you include the following:
Volunteer. The hands-down best strategy for making friends is volunteering. When you work alongside a total stranger to register race participants, make sandwiches, sort donated clothes, or do any other task, you have an immediate connection. Find places you can volunteer and that you enjoy. The first place you try may not be a fit, but you will find your spot. A friend of mine was in an area that had so many people who wanted to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity that they had a wait list. My friend went to the Humane Society and found a group of the most interesting people he had ever met.
Ask a friend. Your current friends are the model for what works well for you as a friend. Ask your friends to connect you with their friends and see if there is a particular friend of theirs who would have a lot in common with you. You can then set up a lunch or dinner for the three of you so you can get to know the new acquaintance better.
Throw a networking party. Networking is not just for work! Invite some friends over and ask each one to bring someone you don’t know. Everyone increases their circle of acquaintances this way. Maybe one will become a friend.
