Detail from the neck of an Emperor Penguin. These feathers overlay one another rather like roof tiles and reach densities of 12 feathers per sq cm (80 feathers per sq inch). They create a barrier that not even the harshest winter gales can penetrate.

When breeding Emperor Penguins come together after time apart they perform a mutual vocal display that helps to keeps the pair bond strong. It starts with both birds holding their heads high as they call, before drooping them in the fashion shown here. During an expedition to the Dawson-Lambton Glacier in Antarctica’s Weddell Sea I spent many hours attempting to photograph this display. However I wanted an isolated pair where there were no other penguins as a distracting background. For a more intimate view I shot the image at penguin level, sitting on the ice just a short distance away.
