Genie

The Demetian forest stretched from the center of Britannia toward the tip where the land ended in the west and met the great ocean. The ocean was worshiped as the most powerful force known to man as all who had attempted to sail it was said to have fallen off the ends of the world. It was where sea kings and great warriors went to die.

Demetians, who had grown tired of the shade of the trees and wanted the joy of open skies, had migrated to the ends of the land and built small communities. Over time, they became fishermen who would dare to venture the shores of the Great Ocean and return with the bounty that they had never seen in the waters of the channel.

Trevena, one such fishing village at the end of the land, was home to a handful of Demetians who had lived there for six generations. The lord of Trevena, Leo De Grance, owned a number of ships, which he acquired over the course of a very industrious life. He had started off as a fisherman’s apprentice, fixing fishing nets, patching boat hulls, and cleaning the catch of the day before being taken to the market, where he would sit all day and chase away the flies while market-goers would stop and buy his master’s fish.

A handsome man, and relatively gainfully employed, he was sought after by the single maidens of the town, but he only had eyes for one—Genie, the young maiden who lived on the edge of the village and helped her mother with the chores they did for others in the village. On the days there was work to do, they would have food to eat. On the days there was no work to do, they would pick berries in the forest.

When his eyes first fell on her, Genie was walking along the beach looking for seashells and whatever else she could harvest for the day to take home to her mother. It had been a hard day to find work and so they had to resort to foraging what they could.

Leo had no insight into her daily plight, but believed that she would be a good companion to help him at the market. As a means to have a fixed job, with a man who had a fixed job with his master, Genie felt it was an opportunity that she could not give up. She was always attracted to his good looks, his valiant charm, and his kind heart. With all those going for him, it was easy to overlook the constant stench of fish guts that hung around him.

“How long have you worked for your master?” she asked one morning as she helped him unload the catch of the day and carry it to the market.

“I’ve been with Master Fluence for six seasons now. When I first began I used to carry his catch, just like you are now. In time, he began to trust me and now I do it all on my own.
