Ruby 621 Pencil
1960s — Nataraj — Mumbai, India
The Nataraj Ruby pencil has been made in India for more than fifty years. It’s cased in locally and sustainably farmed jelutong wood, and has a distinctive red tint to it. The Ruby 621 is made to be affordable and strong, and is recognized worldwide by its red and black stripes. You could say that it’s the Indian equivalent of a yellow No. 2 pencil—it has even been the subject of several television commercials over the past few decades.
