Chapter Twelve
Morgan
It wasn’t often that my anxiety crept up on a race day. That was one of my favorite things about race days. I knew I could race. Always. But every so often, doubt crept it. Today was a big race day. International drivers, lots of press. It wasn’t the year’s biggest race but it was pretty close to it.
So yeah. My anxiety was back.
What I hadn’t expected was how much I wanted to talk to Chase. Last time, he’d been so good with it, even if it had turned out that my teeth were perfectly fine. Having that support, having his hand just slowly rub my back? God, just thinking about it made me feel better.
I knew that he was somewhere around. After a quick text, I was heading off to meet Chase at the VIP area, a badge in my hand to get him through the barriers. Tiptoeing, I pressed a quick kiss against Chase’s lips.
“Hey,” I greeted and then kind of stood there a bit awkwardly. I didn’t want to lead with ‘I’m anxious, make me feel better’ because that wasn’t very nice. But, well. I was anxious and I did want him to make me feel better.
He grinned. “This is amazing,” he informed me. My smile back was half-hearted at best. Yeah, the atmosphere before a big race like this was a lot more intense than the last time Chase had seen me drive. Usually, that intensity keyed me up and got me ready.
Today, I wished that fifty percent of the people would shut the hell up for five minutes so I could catch my breath.
Chase clearly didn’t share my feelings. His head swiveled this way and that, trying to take everything in. “So do you think you’ll win?” Chase asked me, teasingly. “You’d better, I put money on you!”
It was difficult to force my lips to smile. I knew that Chase didn’t mean anything by it, but that definitely felt like even more pressure on me. Reminding me that people would be betting on how well I did wasn’t something I wanted to focus on right now.
“Um, sure,” I muttered, taking Chase’s hand so I could lead us through to where my team was. They knew better than to try to talk to me right now. Most of them recognized my anxiety before races on the rare occasions it did appear.
But not Chase. He kept happily chatting away as we walked until I dragged him into a quieter area of the pre-race buzz.
That finally seemed to get his attention. He raised both eyebrows at me, surprise etched into every feature. The space I’d found for us wasn’t really private. There was no hope of that on race day, but at least the chatter was less overwhelming.
“What’s up?” Chase asked, scanning my face for answers. “Did something happen? You seem…” He waved a hand, like my whole body could stand in for whatever it seemed that I was feeling.
My hand was still holding Chase’s. I realized I was squeezing it quite tightly.
