Dalton drove the Landcruiser up into the front of the complex where the Harbour Master lived. They jumped out and raced up to the apartment. Cav and Carlos were standing in the kitchen, forlorn looks on their faces.

Kryton looked at them, and then over to where the Harbour Master’s lifeless body sat propped up against the wall. It was covered in white bandages, and a drip had been inserted into his arm. It was obvious Cav had done everything he could to try and save him.

Not many people survive a gunshot wound to the stomach, though.

Kryton and Dalton joined the other two in the kitchen.

“Catch him?” asked Cav, looking at the side of Kryton’s face which was turning a shade of purple from the blow he had received in the flower garden.

Kryton just shook his head.

“Almost.”

Cav took a closer look at Kryton, and told him that he should get an ice-pack on the injury as soon as possible.

Kryton agreed, but he was more focused on trying to figure out what had just happened.

“I’m sorry about your boss,” he said to Carlos, “but we need to work out what is going on. Did he say anything before he died?”

Carlos was very composed, any feelings of fear or confusion in the past twenty-four hours were now turning to ones of anger. Too many of his friends and colleagues were dying, and he was angry.

With Kryton by his side, he felt invincible.

“All he could say was Il Papa, and the Arab,” said Carlos.

Kryton looked at the other two, but they could only shrug their shoulders.

“What does that mean?” Kryton asked Carlos.

“I don’t know,” was Carlos’ simple reply, “He just kept repeating it.”

“We did a quick search of the place and found this,” said Cav, handing Kryton a small beige envelope.

Kryton opened the top to look inside, and used his thumb to flick through the large wad of U.S. one-hundred dollar bills enclosed within it.

“Wow,” exclaimed Dalton, looking at the notes over Kryton’s shoulder.

Think I know how he could afford the apartment, Kryton thought to himself, but not wanting to say so in front of Carlos.

He slowly walked around the apartment, thinking.

He was certain that the Harbour Master had been paid to arrange or assist the smuggling, and that there were some Chinese men involved.

“Did Antonio start to do anything that was suspicious or out of the ordinary recently?” Kryton asked Carlos.

Carlos thought for a moment, but said that he couldn’t think of anything.

“What was he like, as a person and a boss?” Kryton asked.

“He was always good to me; he loved to gamble, but he was not very good at it,” Carlos said with a laugh.

Kryton raised his eyebrows while looking at the envelope of cash. There must have been about five-thousand dollars in it. That was significant money, enough to change someone’s life in the relatively impoverished country. The decent apartment attested to that.

“Thoughts?” he said, seeking input from the two operators.

“This isn’t just criminal activity,” said Cav, “far too sophisticated, especially considering the resources required to smuggle arms across open water.
