How Do Scamsters Exploit the U.S. Mail?
A small bill arrives in the mail at the beginning of every month, with a reputable logo and return address. It’s only $4.95, so your father pays it. The scamster gets not only the monthly $4.95 but the checking account or credit card information.2
Your parents receive an “official” notice that their property taxes are going way up, with an invitation to get the property reassessed for only $200.
Using classy stationery, a company offers “authentic” designer accessories, such as shoes and purses. When the package arrives, your parents find nothing but a rock in the box.
Your mother responds to a circular advertising Botox or other antiaging products at a deep discount. Only later does she discover the product is counterfeit—and possibly dangerous.
Your parents’ new financial planner now charges a 10 percent “distribution fee” for your father’s monthly IRA payments.
Immediately after they take out a reverse mortgage, your parents are deluged with mailings touting bogus ways to use the money.
After your father dies, your mother is deluged with ways to “invest” the insurance proceeds.
The week your father dies, a package addressed to him arrives at the house COD. Your mother pays the $74.95 because it must have been important to him.
An authentic-looking letter arrives stressing the importance of having proof of ownership for your parents’ home at a cost of less than $100. (It is not needed, and the same information can be obtained at the courthouse for one-tenth the cost.)
Your father receives an official-looking letter indicating that his Social Security, Medicare, or some other governmental program is in danger unless he sends money immediately. His information then goes on a “sucker list” that gets shared with other scamsters.
