Chapter 9: How to Set Up and Manage
Your Biology Classroom
Brad:
I agree. Give students assignments related to the trip, either to
be done on the trip, afterward as homework, or in the classroom
upon their return.
NBT:
How can I maintain discipline on field trips?
Brad:
Same as anything else—students need to know the expectations.
Arthur: Yes, be prepared. Make sure consequences and rewards are clear.
Disorganization will promote unwanted student adventures.
Brad:
If you need some extra help, recruit other teachers or parents.
Ellen:
I use parents as chaperones.
Arthur: It helps to bring a lot of volunteer helpers. Invite the principal
or a dean.
Using Educational Technology Effectively
NBT:
What advice do you have for using technology effectively in
my classroom?
Arthur: Naturally, this depends on what technology you have avail-
able. Canned labs on CDs can provide experiences beyond the
equipment you have and also experiences with “live” organisms.
Squeamish students are often more comfortable with gross
experiences on a screen than in real life.
Brad:
I use the computer primarily for data collection and analysis, for
diagrams, and for short videos.
Ellen:
A classroom projection system is ideal, especially if you have only
one computer in your classroom. Project what is on your screen,
either through an LED projector or a TV screen. You can explore
websites, model note taking, and use presentation software.
Arthur: Technology online can make for great research resources and
allows individualization within the discipline. The teacher
must first differentiate between garbage and peer-reviewed
material, however.
