“I could get used to having you for a houseguest if you cook like this every night,” Willow teased Collin.

“Good to know I won’t crimp your style,” he volleyed back.

“I’m glad you’re home,” Payton said, as she threw her arms around her sister and hugged her for the umpteenth time.

“I’m happy to be home,” Willow said. “London is wonderful, but it’s not home.” She put a hand over her mouth, trying to stifle her yawn.

“I don’t think I will ever get used to the jet lag though. If you two don’t mind, I’ll call it a night.”

Willow said her good nights and went up to her room followed by Asia, who never left her side from the time she first walked in the door. Shortly after, Collin and Payton headed to their individual rooms.

A hush filled the house and Payton quietly scolded Parker, demanding he stay put in her room. She rubbed both dogs on their heads and promised to return shortly. She opened her bedroom door only enough to squeeze out and padded down the hall to Collin’s room. Thank goodness she put him in the room close to hers and at the far end of the hall from Willow’s room. Before she could tap on the door, an arm snaked out and pulled her inside. The room was completely dark, save for a couple of burning candles on the dresser that were reflected back in the mirror.

“I’ve been waiting patiently,” he whispered, as he nibbled her ear.

“I wanted to make sure Willow was asleep,” she said.

He kissed her neck and trailed his lips up to meet hers. The sparks flickered between them and ignited. Collin moved his hands down to her shirt and started to unbutton it. Suddenly, his hands stilled and he pulled his lips from hers.

“There’s someone outside,” he said softly.

“What?” she asked.

“I heard a branch snap. There is someone walking around your house.”

He dragged her with him over to the dresser and blew out the candles, plunging the room into complete darkness.

“It’s probably one of the security guards,” Payton said.

“No, it’s not. I know all of their scents, and this one is new. Besides, the security people are told to keep their distance because of your dogs.”

He felt her shiver and stiffen in his arms.

“Don’t worry, Payton. No one will get by me. I’m going to walk you back to your room. You lock the door and keep it locked until I return, understand?”

She nodded.

“Can you phone Tristan and Morgan for me and tell them what’s going on?” he asked.

She nodded her head again.

He opened his door and looked into the hall to make sure the area was indeed clear. He silently led her back to her room. Parker and Kes were glued to the window, menacing growls reverberated from Parker.

“Good dogs, you watch the house,” Collin said. He turned back to Payton.

“I won’t leave until I hear the door lock. I will lock the backdoor on my way out. No matter what, you stay put.
