After the rough conversation with her boss, Kaye conjured us a television and even magicked some cable.

I hadn’t even known such a thing was possible, but now I had serious supernatural envy, especially considering my powers were zilch for the time being.

“Everything is possible with magic, Moss, surely you know that,” Kaye explained as I stared at the day-saving entertainment device with wide eyes. “This is my television from home, and I’m linking the cable that I already pay for.”

“So you’re not stealing?” I asked, honestly a little disappointed. Here I was beginning to think we had something in common.

She fixed me with a steely glare. “No.”

“Okay, okay, geez.”

She also conjured some food from her house, too, so we didn’t have to eat the MREs unless we were hard-pressed. And thus, with the help of Kaye’s wonderful witchy abilities, we passed a relaxing, comfortable couple of days at the cabin while we waited for HQ to send us a new location for our crook.

Despite my best efforts to dislike her, old-fashioned, goody two shoes Kaye was growing on me. For starters, she liked to eat as much as I did, and was even willing to cook for me. She also loved trashy TV as much as I did, which meant no arguing over what to watch.

After three days of waiting, we ran out of non-dehydrated foods to eat, so we took a ride down the mountain to a small country store. I walked in at her heels without even thinking twice about it.

Luckily, the store owner was a major cat lover. “Hello, you fuzzy lumpkins,” she squealed, rushing over to stroke my fur. “Oh, he’s lovely, isn’t he?”

Kaye eyed me with a sarcastic glint in her baby blues. “He’s something, all right.”

“You don’t have to put a leash on him? He just follows you?” the older lady asked.

“No, he’s very well trained,” Kaye answered with a chuckle. “Almost like a dog, really.”

I hissed at her for that one.

But she just brushed my embarrassment aside. “If he doesn’t behave, I won’t get him any treatsie-weatsies, will I?” She beamed at me as she spoke in a baby voice.

“I know where you sleep,” I threatened.

“Well, you just have a look around,” the store owner said cheerily. “And I’ll give you a kitty cat discount when you check out.”

By the time we finished, the hand-basket Kaye had grabbed at the door was past the point of overflowing. I’d recently discovered that the only thing I ever wanted to eat these days was meat, so she’d gone all out, buying up their entire stock of hot dogs, lunch meat, canned chicken, and Vienna sausages. It wasn’t much, but it would fill my little cat stomach many times over.

After she paid and I let the sweet old woman pet me one more time, we headed to the car and back up the mountain to our home away from home.

We didn’t make it very far before our front right tire blew out.

“Oh, come on,” Kaye grumbled, slamming her hands into the steering wheel.
