“Are you going to start on me too?” I asked the air.

[You know exactly what kind of idiot you are being, so you don’t need my help at all.]

I chuckled despite myself, taking some of the tension from the situation.

I had fallen into the trap that I think most people have to deal with repeatedly in their lives.

Knowing a behavior is stupid but stubbornly doing it anyway.

“You know how hard this is for me. Right? I was kind of caught off guard.”

[I know, and they know it too. Daisy is beside herself with grief because she thinks she hurt you. They are comforting her before they come talk to you, by the way.]

“Good,” I sighed, deeply. “I let a bit of the old me out there. I really should know better at this point. She didn’t deserve that, she was trying to help.”

[That version of you lived most of your life if you recall. Nearly three decades of learned behavior is not exactly easy to change. Of course it’s what feels right to you as a person, and probably will for a long time to come.]

Jess' text directly into my mind felt like a voice in my head at this point. An angel on the shoulder almost that you can talk to. She took a moment to let me digest her words before she continued.

[Honestly Derk, I am surprised how well you are handling all this. I know you. Knew who you were before this place… who we both were. We never would have considered half the things we have done here before this place changed us. I think you are entitled to the occasional tantrum.]

“It was so not a tantrum…” I stopped, holding up my hand. “Okay, it kind of was, but doing this for power still feels wrong. I know that I can release them and all that. I have heard that a hundred times now, but what if I decide I don’t want to? What if I decide that my wants are more important than theirs. There isn’t a thing they could do to stop me… I could grow to like it. You know that temptation is there for me right? That is what really scares the hell out of me, Jess.”

[That is why I love you, and why they do too. They know you have that power over them and you don’t use it. Remember, love is just a chemical reaction as much as anything. Trust is something that is earned, and far more important in life. You earned that trust… with all of us.]

“Yeah,” I chuckled. “I hope so.”

The door opened and in came the girls. Daisy wasn’t among them.

“I’m sorry,” I said, holding up my hands. “I overreacted. Not sure why that hit me so hard… it just did.”

“Like Jess just told you,” Tyla said. It shouldn’t have surprised me that she was sharing our conversation with them. I glanced at the ceiling with a look. “Don’t you give her that look, Derrick. She knows what is best for you, and so do we.
