Iwas wrong.

Less than what was probably a minute later, the guard came back out. “She will see you now.”

I shared my look of surprise with Tyla as she got off my lap and faced me. Tas even gave me a raised eyebrow.

It was that odd.

I let Tyla go first, as the Mayor probably expected her to be in charge of our little group and I had no problem playing into those expectations for now.

As we walked through the door, my boots went from plodding on the creaking wooden floorboards to silence as it transitioned to a large area rug that lined almost the entire room.

It was cozy, in a rustic sort of way.

On each of the walls sat bookshelves lined with old leather-bound tomes and scrolls. A large window sat on one side, but they covered it in deep red curtains, making it dark if not for the glowing crystals illuminating the room.

Panzite crystals, actually.

I recognized them from our time in Vex’s sanctum when I had first arrived. Their blueish white hue reminded me of fluorescent lights in old buildings back on Earth. It also meant whoever we were dealing with was wealthy.

Tyla told me that those crystals were expensive, and I wished I still had some.

On the other side of the room sat a desk of ornate wood that looked nothing like I had seen since I had been here. It was a deep red hard wood that was well cared for if aged, sitting about 6 feet away from the back wall.

Behind the desk, backdropped by the wall and a large painting, sat an ancient woman with gray hair tied in a neat bun.

The painting behind her was a portrait of an old woman spewing out fire over the desert plains, incinerating hundreds of large tan wolves that were attacking the town of Paradise.

Based on the age of the painting, I doubted it was the woman in front of me. But with a magic society and healing, I could be wrong.

“Greetings,” the woman said, looking directly at Tyla. “I understand you want to pass through to the deserts and buy supplies?”

Tyla glanced quickly over at me before speaking. “Yes, I am Tyla-Rose, formerly of Blackrun. We seek passage through to the desert and supplies… I’m sorry, may I have your name?”

“Helena,” she said. “I am the mayor of the town. Used to be a noble in service to Rivenhold, but… well, things have changed.”

Tyla nodded at her words but did not speak, waiting for the woman to say what she wanted.

“Good,” she continued. “You are not some uppity noble spawn that thinks the world should dance to their tune. You realize that the desert is suicide? No one returns.”

“We are aware,” Tyla said.

“Something is odd here…” Helena said, and she began looking into the eyes of each person in my group. When she got to me, her brow raised. “Why are you in charge?”

I was momentarily surprised, replaying the conversation over in my head to figure out what gave it away.
