Of course women did not have to go to Vietnam to find the inspiration to initiate a movement on behalf of gender equality or to realize that men in the antiwar movement could be dismissive of women’s full participation. The women’s movement of the late sixties had many roots, but the civil rights and antiwar movements were among the most crucial. They gave thousands of women the experience, skill, and political self-awareness that would fuel their own movement, a movement that endured long after the war and created many lasting institutions.
