Lively Dining Rooms

Our ideal dining room is one that promotes a comfortable atmosphere, where people like to gather. This space is as likely to be the setting for a lively dinner party as it is a place to work on a school project.

The shape of a room dictates the style of dining table, but we often source round ones, as they are more conductive to great discussions. Another option is a long farmhouse table—a bit more casual and especially functional for large gatherings for children and their friends.

Twenty-nine inches is an ideal height for all dining tables, as it promotes a casual and comfortable dining experience. Shorten your tables and you will see a difference! We like to mix all types of seating at the table—benches for long tables, slipcovered chairs for easy cleanup, and masculine-style leather chairs. The key is to avoid the overscaled bulkiness that so many of the new chairs carry. Instead, look for slimmer pieces or vintage chairs that have a narrower silhouette.

Combining distinctive finishes and materials always adds fresh energy to a space. A dining room, where the focus is on a few major elements, is an ideal place to experiment with different pairings. We avoid matching dining sets and instead focus on a dynamic interplay of unexpected combinations: a vintage stone pedestal topped with glass; a rich, dark wood table contrasted with slipcovered chairs in a light fabric; a group of wood chairs partnered with a zinc-topped table. In one project, we combined industrial, Swedish, and garden elements to create an informal yet elegant dining room.

Clean-lined furniture gives the dining area character, and an unexpected pairing of gauzy linen with an oversized industrial metal frame makes the light fixture a favorite of ours. Photograph © 2011 Lisa Romerein
