We landed in the parking garage.

I had a brief moment for the crushing guilt to almost consume me. I had abandoned that poor girl. At the absolute best, she would spend the rest of her life in a box somewhere. At worst, she would be killed.

I filled my lungs to vent my anger at Mosaic, but all the air was knocked out of me with a smack to my stomach.

And it was not seconds. I appeared, felt the guilt and my feet on concrete, then the impact. That’s how fast it happened. Mosaic had to be mid-swing before I teleported from the SSA building.

I think if I had any level of readiness, my new cat-sponsored upgrades would have let me roll with that punch. But I wasn’t ready, and I bent over and fell to the floor, gasping.

A second later, I felt the bracelet of a pair of handcuffs snap around my wrist. Morgan yelped in surprise and fear.

Arms went around me and tossed me in the back of the SUV again. This time, it was complete darkness. They hadn’t thrown Morgan in here with me.

Not that complete darkness was the issue it used to be. I’ve seen enough nature videos. I know cats can’t actually see in the dark, they just see better than humans. Until now. This parahuman could see fine. Well, fine is a stretch. Colors were gone, and it had more of an IR filter vibe. That being said, I didn’t have a lot to look at. It was a square box.

A square box with a metal loop that the other bracelet of the handcuff was now attached to.

The hitting and dumping happened so fast I wasn’t even aware of the cuff ring until I pulled my hand to try and sit up. The metal ring built into the box was small. I hadn’t even noticed it on the ride over.

And just like that, I went from a teleporting superhero to a victim in the back of a truck. I yanked on the handcuffs, but my improved cat strength wasn’t improved enough to break SSA-issue handcuffs, and they only bit deeper into my wrist.

I could hear what was going on, but it was muffled. I think they thought it was soundproof and would have been without my upgrade.

“Do you plan to kill me, Mosaic?” Dr. Collins’ voice was calm but tense, like she had a gun to her head.

“If you command the Tabula Rosa to intervene in our conversation, you will die.” Mosaic’s voice was still pretty robotic.

“Alright.” Dr. Collins had a lot of negotiating with a madman in her voice. “I am not your enemy. We’re on the same side.”

“Most likely scenario, you ordered White Out to erase the General’s mind. Why?” Mosaic stated.

“I don’t know if I did. I told you, all our memories were wiped.” Dr. Collins really wanted to be believed.

“Don’t pretend you’re our friends,” Quill shot back.
