Chapter 12
Gary all but skipped through the week, excited as a kid whoâd eaten a thousand bushels of cotton candy. When Justine called to ask if he wanted to be exclusive, his heart had slammed in his chest so hard he thought the damn thing might pop out of his body. But theyâd both confirmed they were commitment types, and theyâd been friends forever, so if she wanted to take that leap, heâd follow her over the cliff all day long.
Of course, he still had concerns that once the newness of their romantic relationship wore off, she might become frustrated if he couldnât perform. But Gary also understood he couldnât transpose Nicoleâs reactions on Justine, so he would continue to foster openness and honesty between them. He hoped that if she began to feel annoyed or frustrated, she would tell him so they could try and find a solution.
He worked tirelessly for the rest of the week and mainly communicated through text with Justine. On Friday, she texted him to schedule their weekend plans.
Justine: Hey, lover. Avery and I were hoping you could come hang with us on Sunday since itâs your day off.
Gary grinned while he answered her from his patrol car as he sat on the highway on the outskirts of town. The radar gun was on, but it hadnât registered a blip in at least an hour, so hearing from her cured his boredom.
Gary: Iâd love to. Donât you go to your familyâs on Sundays though?
Justine: Usually, but Avery and I wanted a day just for us. We decided to invite you, but thatâs it. You should feel extremely honored. I might make mac and cheese for you.
Chuckling, his thumbs moved over the keyboard.
Gary: I love mac and cheese. What time should I come over?
Justine: Any time after eleven is fine. We can have lunch and maybe play with Avery outside. Itâs supposed to be a nice day.
Gary: Iâll wear sneakers and casual clothes then.
Justine: And Iâll make something a bit fancier than kid food for us for dinner. Iâd love to have you stay over. Iâve discussed with Avery and sheâs pretty excited to have you around more. No pressure, but I want to put it out there. Youâre the only guy I would consider having stay over when the romance is so new, but weâve known each other forever, so it just seems right.
Emotion swamped him as the words registered deep within. They meant more to him than she would ever know.
Justine: Okay, you went radio-silent. Did I blow it? Damn, I blew it.
Chuckling, he shook his head.
Gary: You didnât blow it. Iâm just trying to wrap my brain around the fact I get to spend the day with you both. And the night with you. It might be my ultimate fantasy.
Justine: Um, we need to get you a life, but Iâll say thank you because Iâm really excited too.
She shot him a geek face emoji.
Breathing a laugh, he texted her goodbye before the dispatcher chimed in over the radio, effectively pulling him back to work.
