CHAPTER FOURTEEN
âWhat? No, everything is very quiet. No one put a toe out of line. Yeah. Yes. I checked in and I put the money in the safe, put the fear of God into Leon, Juan, and the rest.â
âGood.â
Alfie wasnât on speaker phone, probably so Medina couldnât overhear any stray noises that would alert him to my presence. âWhere do you want the stash moved?â
âWhy move it?â Medina had a slick, arrogant voice that sounded sleepy or drugged (maybe both).
âWell, you live there. If the cops get a warrant to searchââ
âWhy would the cops get a warrant? You think the narcos bother Beltran-Leyva? You think they bother Los Zetas? Medina is better than all of them. Why? Iâm never in the news, am I, Alfie? And I have a lot more reason to be. You know that, donât you, hermano?â
Yep. Medina was holding the top spot on my âTo-Killâ list. The mocking in his voice made my blood boil. Alfie stayed still and silent, but a muscle jumped in his jaw and the veins in neck and arms were rising like someone was inflating them. The use of the word hermano, brother, was such a sick slap in the face.
âBut Iâm sorry about that. I didnât know you back then. I would have let you have her back.â A long, loud laugh that ended in a coughing fit gave me noise-cover enough to go over to Alfie, sliding behind him, wrapping my arms around him. I didnât know how to comfort him, but I felt like I had to hold him together somehow. I could see Medina pulling all Alfieâs strings, plucking him apart like a crow with a half-dead animal. I laid my cheek to his head, just pressing into him.
Medina stopped coughing after a moment. His voice became brisk. âThat reminds me. Itâs almost the middle of the month. I shouldnât have stayed away an extra day, but... Mm. Sometimes you have to pursue an opportunity. Iâll take care of the payments tomorrow, and we should be fine for weeks. Plenty of time to move product. Speaking of opportunities and new products, I hear you finally got yourself a playmate with some staying power. Iâve told you before, you can always get more out of a woman than you think. I hear sheâs the real deal. Real pretty, real wasted, real hot.â
âMhm.â
âBring her by sometime. I wanna... meet her.â
I found myself flat on my back on the mattress, swallowing a gasp. Alfie was up, pacing next to the bed like a caged tiger as he retrieved his clothes from last night. âSheâs out of town.â
âThatâs okay. I think Sierra is waiting for me at the loft. I hope your present is just as nice.â
There was a long pause. I watched Alfie swallow several times until his voice finally came out smooth. âHer daddy is some high up guy. Heâs connected with politicians.â
âSo?â
âSo... Donât play too rough.â
âAre you telling me what to do?â Medinaâs voice turned threatening and completely sober in a heartbeat.
