The Christian Message, Centered on Jesus Christ

Since the Christian message focuses on the person of Jesus the Christ, all catechesis must transmit the centrality of Jesus in the Gospel message. Centering on Jesus and his Paschal Mystery, the document presents Jesus as the center of salvation history. The NDC explains: “As the definitive Revelation of God, he is the point in salvation history toward which the created order proceeds from the beginning of time and the final event toward which it converges . . . He is ‘the key, the center and the purpose of the whole of [man’s] history.’”131

Jesus’ proclamation of the good news of the kingdom of God marks a new and definitive intervention by God. Tantamount to Jesus’ good news is salvation and liberation for all. Liberation, in this sense, refers to the fundamental form of freedom, that is, the liberation from sin. Such a message frees the oppressed so they might be open to the working of the Holy Spirit in their lives.132

It would appear, that the theology of Christocentricity, in the manner of which it is presented in the National Directory for Catechesis, is focused on the divinity of Jesus Christ, thus underplaying the human, historical Jesus. Might such a focus be an obstacle in dialogue with other religions? Are its claims exclusive and monopolistic?
