• First they decided to place flyers on the bulletin boards at arts and craft stores like Ben Franklin's, Michael's, and Garden Ridge; they also made a deal with the managers of these stores that, if they would help spread the word, they would encourage the clients to purchase their supplies at their stores. The managers went one better and said they would offer a 10 percent discount. This proved to be a win-win for all involved.

• As more people started to come to the basic classes, there became a need for advanced classes. So they found Donna, who would teach a one-stroke painting class, and Jan would teach stenciling. The students were excited and enjoyed the classes so much, they were running out of their own projects, so they would either work on their friends’ projects (for a fee, of course); some would go to thrift stores and pick up furniture and then refinish it, and then they would get together and have a craft sale.

• Some of the ladies became so good at designing and painting, they hired themselves out and did freelance custom work in clients’ homes and businesses.

This worked out for Sam and Molly, because they filled a need—people needed a creative outlet and a place to work.

Now, let's look at Judy, who is a fun-loving, outgoing lady who was looking for a little extra spending money. Judy thought she would deliver balloon bouquets for people's birthdays, promotions, and anniversaries. She said she could get started with a small investment, a basic box of balloons and a helium tank and some string. She would write and print the cards on her home computer. Judy made up flyers and posted them in businesses. It didn't take long for the phone to start ringing; customers thought it was such a novel idea. Judy was having so much fun doing this; she started to dress up as a clown and then started to make catchy poems or even singing a verse when she made her deliveries. Her business spread by word-of-mouth so fast, it was hard for her to keep up with the deliveries. It was a good thing she had a friend who would make up the arrangements, and Judy would make the deliveries.

Rita, like Judy, wanted to earn an extra income. Rita liked to eat ice cream, so her part-time-income venture would be to provide make-your-own-sundae parties. First, she thought she would do it just for birthdays, but she soon figured out the sundae parties would be an added treat for any type of party, including golf outings, swim parties, office parties, TGIF parties, girls’ night in parties—any time a group of people wanted to get together. One lady invited her group of five families that regularly got together on Saturday night to a BYOB party (bring your own banana); no one had any idea what to expect. You guessed it; they made their own banana splits and had a great time. Once the word spread, Rita was an addition to many corporate functions.
