Sneak Peek: Discipline

“I’m quite pleased with your progress, Miss Sheldon,” Professor Feversham said, his rumbling voice pitched low so it wouldn’t carry.

“Thank you, Professor. But I simply followed your instructions.”

They stood in the entrance of a cozy drawing room. Inside, half a dozen young ladies in their late teens and early twenties played children’s games and laughed merrily together. Despite their ages, they wore gaily colored knee-length dresses with short sleeves and had their hair styled in the simple braids or loose curls usually favored for well-bred children.

“Don’t be modest, Lettie,” the big man chided gently, his gray eyes twinkling with pleasure. “I merely offered suggestions about the latest theories on mental age regression. Your hard work gave the idea a life of its own.”

“I’m pleased that you’re satisfied.”

“Oh, I am far more than satisfied. I shall send word immediately to a couple of gentlemen I know who shall be most gratified by the fruits of your efforts. I foresee a bright future for this new wing of the Academy.”

“Do you think so?”

He nodded. “There’s certainly no dearth of gently born ladies of good families who have fallen on hard times. Your efforts here shall prevent untold numbers of them from having to resort to prostitution or theft simply to survive. They will leap at the chance to be well taken care of and to live in their accustomed style once more—especially when they realize how little is asked of them in return.”

They both turned at the sound of a throat being cleared behind them. One of the Professor’s muscular orderlies stood there nervously, even as he peered with some curiosity over their shoulders at the young women in the drawing room.

“Your pardon, Professor. I do hate to disturb you, but you have a visitor. Lord Dowling—I believe he’s a baronet—is waiting downstairs. He seemed most apologetic at coming unannounced, but asked if he might have a few minutes of your time.”

The Professor frowned. “Is he alone?”

“No, sir. He has a young lady with him.”

The frown disappeared. “In that case I suppose I shall accommodate his wishes.”

Miss Sheldon didn’t bother trying to hide her smirk or the laughter that danced in her wide green eyes. “How very generous of you.”

“Save that sharp tongue for your young charges in there, Miss Sheldon.”

“Oh, please believe me that I shall, Professor.”

Feversham shook his head at her bald innuendo, a fond smile playing on his lips. “Come along, John. We shall leave Miss Sheldon to tend to her flock. No doubt they shall soon receive a rather fearsome tongue-lashing.”

Lord Dowling was a thin, bespectacled man in his early thirties with receding blond hair and a harried manner. He perched on the edge of a chair in the waiting room, bouncing a cane in his hands, his light brown eyes darting around nervously. His companion, a young woman in her early twenties, appeared as refined as the baronet, but her smooth skin was exotically darker and luxurious midnight curls flowed down her back. Brown eyes so deep they were almost black regarded the Professor and John with naked curiosity.
