Chapter Nine

"I'm slowly dying out here! I need breakfast!" Ryker called, his voice pouty. Why they felt the need to leave me last in line for the shower, I'd never understand.

"Check my nightstand!" I called back. I had prepared a small bag of his favorite snacks just for moments like this. If any of us were guilty of getting hangry, it was Ryker. Laughing to myself when I heard the other guys’ protests and playful yells, I went back to taking my time in the shower.

"Why does Ryker get the special treatment?" Ben protested when I finally joined them in the living room.

"Ten more spankings," Lincoln growled playfully, and my traitorous cheeks flamed at the image in my head.

"Promises, promises," I teased, flopping down on his lap. When I wiggled myself around to get comfortable...and tease him, he groaned and dug his fingers into my hips to stop me.

"Make that fifteen, brat," he growled, tickling my sides until I jumped off of him.

"Okay, what the fuck is up with threatening spankings?" Ethan asked, rolling his eyes at our antics.

"It was a joke the first time, then I saw how she reacted," Lincoln said with a smug smile.

"Ah, fair enough," Ethan replied like it made total sense, pulling on his converse and looking at the rest of us expectantly.

"I did some research, figured out the town has one of those diners Brea loves. The kind where they boast the world's best grilled cheese," Ryker said, quirking an eyebrow at me. I snorted, knowing that part enticed him more than me. On the other account, he was right. Diners always made me happy.

"I'm down," I agreed quickly, sliding on my shoes and grabbing my messenger bag. "There's some kind of festival in town, too… a pie festival if I’m remembering right. I saw a flyer at the gas station on the way in."

"Shut up. I want to do a pie eating contest!" Ryker said, taking my hand and dragging me from the room. We all piled into two golf carts, heading for the SUV.

"I'm sure the diner will know something about it," I reassured him when he huffed at how slow we were going. “They likely do sign-ups right up until the event." We all claimed our seats and buckled in, too hungry to wait for long.

"True," he agreed, relaxing into his seat as Lincoln eased the SUV down the road and back to civilization.

"Does anyone else think it's weird we never saw the owner?" I asked, realizing it'd been a few days, and he’d just never showed up.

"He seemed like he was afraid of the place, to be honest," Ben added with a lazy one shoulder shrug. "I didn't think much of it. Probably paid someone to go leave the papers for us. He did say the cleaning crew was coming one day next week, I think. I'll have to check the email again."

"Hell, I'm afraid of that place," Ethan added nervously. "Or need I remind you of the animatronics scene from yesterday? Still fucking trying to wrap my head around that shit.
