As for Shanghai, its position as China’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan city was restored by reforms during the 1990s, which made it again a destination of choice for entrepreneurs. One of its advantages in terms of fostering a lively fashion scene is simply its difference and distance from Beijing. Blogger Wang Houhou, a native of Beijing, compares it favorably to the capital with reference to fashion among other things:

Beijing really makes me want buy expensive things, things with logos, things that are obvious from their shape, designed to overwhelm other people, things that you can’t buy in China . . . Shanghai’s not like that. In Shanghai you can dress entirely from small local designers. Drifting through the subways, you can pick up ten things all much the same as each other. And you suddenly get that feeling of pleasure at wearing clothes.45
