‘A week is a long time in politics,’ so the saying goes, and it is also a long time in the life of a three- or four-year-old. What is happening is a mixture of us taking out our own frustrations on our children for not getting the message and us trying to make the consequences/punishments so aversive that our children could not possibly want to behave boldly again. Unfortunately, our children often don’t understand that this is the message that we are trying to give. If they do get the message, then maybe the punishment is not acting as a deterrent. But I would caution against increasing the severity of the punishment, because what ends up happening is that some very harsh punishments get doled out to children, all in the name of behaviour management.
