Sleeping Patterns: What’s Normal, What’s Not

Let’s do the bad news first, shall we? If, from birth to 1, a baby gradually starts to sleep more and more, then, from 1 to 3, a toddler gradually starts to sleep less and less. But (and this is the good news), it’s only a little bit less – and, if things do go a bit pear-shaped, it’s (generally) much, much easier to sort.

Over the next couple of years, your toddler’s need for sleep decreases, on average, by about two hours in every 24 (see Table 14-1 for more details). But most of that decrease gets accounted for in the day-time, as she becomes more and more able to make it through to bedtime without an afternoon snooze. (Whether you feel able to make it through to her bedtime without her afternoon snooze is another matter, of course – see ‘A word about naps’.)
