I had to edge towards it,

close the cover with my bare foot.

checking the bin for bones or meat

then leaving with a backward glance, in his own time,

crossing the lawn and closing the gate.

for fettling mould and moss from bevelled window frames.

Sandpaper took back old wood to its true grain.
