Chapter Eight

The rooftop was empty when I arrived a couple of minutes after seven. It had a hell of a view, including one that led to the Jr. High Evette went to, about five hundred yards away. I was invisible and my strength and speed were enhanced.

Harry Franklin came out of the rooftop door, sliding a piece of cardboard between the door and door jam before it closed, so he wasn’t locked up here. He immediately got to his knees and popped the rifle case, but before he could get any farther, I picked him up by the throat and shoved him into the wall as I turned visible.

A few words and the witchcraft spell had him stuck to the wall like a web. After that, I used a witch spell to review his memories of Nancy, and to see exactly what the goddess had said to him and how his thoughts and beliefs had shifted.

Really, after that it was a piece of cake to undo it, though it took a few minutes of talking to do it. It wasn’t fun, the way he was terrified, but it was easy. The work later at the U.N. building would be much more complicated. Still, when I was done and released him, he took his rifle and left. He wasn’t actually a bad guy, crack sniper in the military, gun enthusiast, but not a murdering asshat who killed twelve-year-old girls of any race.

That was really all I could do, so I returned to the house for breakfast. For the moment Nancy was out of my reach, but I promised myself I’d have words with her soon if Nate didn’t handle her.

“Franklin is handled. All I have today is the U.N. thing at one fifteen,” I noted as I sat down and joined breakfast. If I got too bored, I could always do the second painting in the series, or make a painting for Amber or Caitria like I had the others, but I didn’t really know them well enough yet to capture their essence. Caitria was still finding her feet here, and Amber was still becoming who she should be.

Lily said, “I should go next, since I booked a hospital gig for ten o’clock.” Then she smirked at me.

I shook my head in amazement, “How did you manage to do that?”

Lily chuckled, “A celebrity was supposed to be there today, reading to the kids in the children’s ward for Leukemia patients, but cancelled last minute. The kids’ parents were coming out too, so the hospital administrator told me I was a godsend, if you can believe it. Anyway, he’s going to brief the parents when they arrive before we get there. It’ll be up to them if they’ll allow us to heal the kids, and they’ll have to sign a waiver absolving the hospital of any culpability in the results. So we should find out which ones we can help as soon as we arrive.”

June giggled, “That’s amazing. And we all thought it’d be hard.
