“Your sister?” Hades asked the instant their feet touched the soft carpet of her hotel room. “How?”

“I do not know. It… It is impossible.” Zeus looked ill, and Alkaios grabbed a bottle of water from the small refrigerator and screwed off the top. He extended it to Zeus, who accepted it with a dazed expression. He stood still for a moment, as if unsure what to do next, and Alkaios slowly pressed his fingers against the plastic until Zeus lifted it to his lips. Hades watched as the blond god downed the water in massive gulps, feeling a mixture of alarm at his reaction and deep respect for her husband. He had every right to despise the King of Olympus, yet he had forgone the path of vengeful bitterness and offered forgiveness instead.

“Is she like Poseidon?” Hades softened her voice in an attempt to coax Zeus from his panic.

“She is my sister,” he repeated with a furrowed brow.

“I meant, is she a great? Is she powerful like you, like Poseidon and Alkaios?”

“No.”

Hades released her breath in relief.

“She is worse.”

“Worse?” Alkaios voiced the question ricocheting off Hades’ skull, their spines stiffening.

“There are three gods, I fear. Two, I am wary of. You and Poseidon are the completion of the trinity. We are the three greats of Olympus, and I never wish to fight either of you. Our battles would come at a significant cost. I fear Minotaur and Hades. As the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, I stand small against them. I have no shame in admitting both terrify me.” Zeus paused as if to fortify his resolve. “And lastly, I fear my eldest sister. The firstborn of Cronus, she was the only Titan I ever feared. She is the only child of my father to surpass me in every way.”

“What is she?” Hades asked in a soft tone.

“Nyx,” Zeus answered, “the goddess of the night, and with a single touch, with a simple snap of her fingers, she can put mankind to sleep… or she can stop their hearts in death.”

“How do I not know of her?” Hades asked. “I lived with you on Olympus for decades. How has she remained hidden?”

“Because she is dead.” Zeus walked to the frost-coated window and looked out upon the stormy city. “It is impossible. She… she should not have survived.”

He collapsed against the cold glass. Hades and Alkaios shared a concerned expression, but neither found the words to comfort him. A dead god returned to haunt them. What could they say? And so Alkaios moved to the mattress and sank to a seat. Hades followed his lead, and they sat with clasped hands until Zeus was ready.

“Nyx was the first-born of the Titan King.” Zeus finally broke the silence and moved away from the window to sit on the sofa across from the bed. His large frame consumed every inch of the cushioned space, yet he appeared small and defeated as he sank back. “She was conceived of love
