27. PTOLEMY

1. Yet another one, Ptolemy by name, lived a life that is difficult if not impossible to relate. He lived beyond Scete at what is called Klimax.* The place is so called because nobody can live there, the brothers’ well being eighteen miles away. He carried many an amphora from there, and in December and January he used to collect the dew off the rocks with a sponge, for there is heavy dew in those parts at that time. He succeeded in living there for fifteen years.

2. But estranged from teaching, from the company, from the beneficial discourse of holy men, and from frequent partaking of the mysteries, he diverged so far from the straight way as to say that those things were of no account. He became so unsettled that he went off wandering in Egypt to this day, delivering himself to overeating and knocking back wine, with not a word to anybody. And this misfortune befell Ptolemy from unreasonable conceit, as it is written: “Those who have no government fall like leaves.”*
