The Fear of Failure

“Success is failure in progress.”

—Albert Einstein

Too many people see failure as something to avoid. They believe that failure is the opposite of success. It certainly feels that way in the moment! No one experiences failure and thinks, This is awesome. Where can I get some more?

But failure is not the opposite of success; failure is part of success. It’s a step in the process. No one has ever achieved anything great without some failures along the way.

There’s a famous story among IBM employees, of Tom Watson Jr. when he was running the company many years ago. Watson had called one of his vice presidents into his office to discuss a failed development project that cost IBM somewhere in the range of $10 million (many times that number in today’s dollars).

Expecting to be fired, the VP came to the office with his letter of resignation in hand. Tom Watson Jr. looked at the letter, shook his head, and responded, “Why would we let you go? We just invested $10 million in your education.”

Failure is only truly failure if you learn nothing. In fact, we learn more from failures than we do from success, and when we brush those failures under the rug or try to gloss over them, we rob ourselves, and those around us, of the valuable wisdom that comes with that experience.

Babe Ruth is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He was called The Sultan of Swat and held numerous Major League Baseball records, including career home runs, runs batted in (RBIs), slugging percentage, and several others. Some of his records still stand at the time I’m writing this book.
