OVERBOARD!

New York, to Buffalo, then on to Detroit. His backpack contained a change of clothes and a sleeping bag. Most nights he simply hiked into the woods off the highways, spread out his sleeping bag, and settled in for the night. He’d be up at dawn and be back on the road hitchhiking, eager to see what the new day would bring.

From Detroit he ventured north into the wilds of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, crossing into Canada at Sault Sainte Marie. The journey was totally unstructured and he loved every minute of it. Once in Canada, he had no specific destination, no timetable, and no one to meet. Usually he would simply pick a place on the map. I think I’ll go there. Other times he’d get a ride, and the driver would ask, “Where are you headed?” Loch would answer with a question of his own: “Where are you going?” And when the driver responded, Loch would say, “I think I’ll go there.”

Loch wound up making a loop through a region of Ontario north of Lake Superior. First he traveled northeast to Timmons and then west through an isolated area of the province, before heading south to Thunder Bay, on the northwest shore of Lake Superior. The final leg of his journey found him hitching rides due east for several hundred miles, passing through North Bay and Kingston, Ontario, and ultimately returning to the States via upstate New York.

Besides feeling the thrill of seeing new places, meeting new people, and having a sense of total freedom, Loch also grew in confidence, knowing he could tackle just about any problem that life on the road could throw at him. And just as with his earlier canoe trip, he knew he had stamina to get through physically demanding situations. This staying power, as well as his newfound feeling of resourcefulness, were just two of the reasons he later gravitated to rigorous and demanding blue-water sailing.

And now, battered by the seas, minutes seeming like hours, Loch needs every bit of internal toughness he can muster. His mind drifts to places he really doesn’t want it to go. He wonders if Kathy, Ron, and Chris are alive, thinking that if they have drowned and he lives, he must explain to their families what went wrong.
