Storm

The smell of Kush in the air pulled me from my slumber. Prying my eyes open, I blinked trying to get them to focus in the darkness of my bedroom. I rolled over into my stomach and raised to my elbows, every muscle in my body groaned as I did. The things Lionel had done to me, I’d be feeling for days.

My eyes settled on the slight glow coming from the corner.

“You made yourself at home I see,” My voice was filled with a grogginess that made my tone rough. I didn't mind at all though.

Lionel spoke up. “Couldn’t sleep.”

“Why not?” I pressed my face into the pillow and closed my eyes, waiting for him to answer.

“I was thinking.”

"About?” I coaxed.

“The past. Our future. What’s the word for when something’s meant to be and will be no matter what?”

“Fate, kismet, or destiny.” I supplied, wondering where he was heading.

“Yeah, any one of those can work.” he exhaled and continued.

“I haven’t been completely forthcoming with a few things where it involves you.” He confessed. His voice, tight and low. He sounded so serious.

I cracked one eye open. “And what exactly does that mean?” I asked.

I hoped he wasn’t about to tell me he was married.

“You know I was there the day he met you?” He supplied.

“Huh? Who? Where?” I asked, confused.

“Alonzo, at the clerk's office. That first day you met him. You only had eyes for that nigga though. So, you probably didn't see me.”

“You were not. I remember that day clearly. Zo had been alone."

He chuckled. “You had on a white blouse with black geometric shapes, tucked into a black pencil skirt. Your hair was in these curls that framed your face and your lips were painted a plum colored that had me wonder what they'd taste like. Your eyes weren’t so sad back then.” He recounted.

I closed my eyes, thinking back to that day and knew he was right.

“Wow, you remembered all that?”

I was so glad it was dark. Heat had risen to my face, my cheeks felt hot.

“I told Alonzo, you were gorgeous. Just looking at you had my chest feeling funny. Zoe agreed. I didn’t expect him to approach you though. At first I was pissed, felt like I had gotten something stolen from me, but then I thought about it. You hadn’t even looked in my direction and I was standing right next to him. I told myself you weren’t meant for me. Maybe next lifetime. I tried to stop thinking about you and wondering what if. But that was impossible. The universe kept putting you in my path. Jenica is my sister.” He said, referring to my hairstylist.

I pushed up onto my elbows, fully awake. When I thought about it I could see the family resemblance.

I sat up, pulling my thin bed sheet with me, wrapping around my body. I threw my feet over the side of the bed and sat on the edge. “We go to the same gym. I’ve even seen you in the grocery store damn near weekly.
