Thirty-One

Once her tour with Logan was over, Rae was returned to her mini apartment for more waiting.

Alone, she kept replaying the meeting with Jenny in her head. It was a pile of shocking things, all adding up to one bigger shocking thing: how Jenny looked, how she spoke, how she reacted to seeing Rae.

Not that I expected her to welcome me with open arms, given the whole terrorist angle. But we’re playing for the same team now, right?

Rae was genuinely hurt. Even Logan’s explanation, supposed to help, made her feel worse. Lying on the sofa, she argued with herself about how to handle Jenny.

Jealous of me? Enough to hate me that badly? What did I ever do to her?

And then her brain would remind her: You’re her competition.

So I should feel bad about being smart? she shot back.

Well…smart, witty, and about to become the new media darling of OBK, if Logan has his way.

Oh yeah…then there’s Logan.

Yes, Logan. Logan, your sort-of ex. Logan, OBK’s superstar employee. Logan, who admits he’s still interested in you even though he’s dating your ex-best friend.

Rae jumped up and began tidying the apartment, tossing clothes in the laundry basket and remaking the bed. The activity helped calm her. There’s nothing there at all. I’ve moved on.

I hope so. Her brain was ricocheting through all the implications this could have for her mission. She needed Logan’s help, but she didn’t need too much of his attention, or else it might be hard to scope out the company’s operations. And she definitely didn’t need Jenny’s jealousy focused on her like a laser beam, further impeding her progress.

With a groan she sank down on the bed. Why, of all people, do I have to end up working for Jenny? At first Rae had thought Logan’s string-pulling was going to make her life easier than she could have hoped.

Now she realized she was in for a living nightmare. If Jenny was as jealous as Logan suggested, she’d be watching Rae like a hawk. And then how would Rae smuggle out information?

As it was she was starting to get uneasy about the possibility of passing messages to Drew.

He had given her a brief rundown of how to run an encrypted session on a laptop, leaving no trace of user activity.

She knew where the bootable memory stick containing the software was hidden—Drew had already told her that it was in a locker in one of the city subway stations; all she had to do was go there with the pretense of depositing a bag before a trip, and she could slip the device into her pocket.

After that she could plug it into any computer, boot up a clean session, log into the D-Row Club to pass messages back and forth, and log out again, leaving no trace of her browser history or what she’d been doing online.

It gave her a fairly safe bubble for getting communication back and forth to him.

However, she was now realizing that there were literally a dozen obstacles standing between her and that easy communication.
