‘I will kill myself if I am not allowed to lead a normal life.’

AFTER MY RETURN from India in November 1996, I wrote to Phoolan to thank her for everything. I also put in a plea for something to be done to improve conditions in the village for her mother and sister. There were all kinds of tensions within the family and I did not want to interfere too clumsily. It was obvious that Phoolan felt she owed more to her brother than to the others. Maybe what had happened in the past justified this. Nevertheless, despite their poverty, Phoolan’s family in the village had looked after me as best they could. I wrote:

I wonder whether it might be a good idea for you to spend a little money on enlarging the house, and putting electricity in. Your mother is getting older, and she has had a hard life. Also you have to consider your prestige now you are an MP. In any case, the money would not be wasted, as it would increase the value of your property.
